Abstract

Diarrhea is an environmentally-based disease that remains a public health problem, particularly in coastal and island areas, due to limited access to clean water, sanitation, and suboptimal hygiene practices. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the incidence of diarrhea in the Laiwui Community Health Center (Puskesmas) working area, South Halmahera Regency. The study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 120 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire covering clean water sources, toilet ownership, handwashing with soap, and water and food management. Diarrhea incidence was determined based on a history of ≥3 loose stools in 24 hours. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that 38.3% of respondents experienced diarrhea. The incidence of diarrhea was significantly associated with clean water sources (p = 0.001), toilet ownership (p = 0.000), handwashing with soap (p = 0.000), and water and food management (p = 0.000). The conclusion of this study indicates that environmental and behavioral factors play a significant role in the incidence of diarrhea, so strengthening basic sanitation and clean and healthy living behaviors is needed to reduce the incidence of diarrhea.
